IP Ratings Explained: A Buyer's Guide to Choosing a Waterproof & Dustproof Scale

August 30, 2025

Changzhou, China - In industrial settings, weighing scales are often exposed to water, dust, and other contaminants that can damage internal components and compromise accuracy. This is where an IP (Ingress Protection) rating becomes a vital specification. If you're buying a bench weighing scale or floor weighing scale for a food processing plant, a chemical factory, or any environment with liquids and dust, understanding IP ratings is essential.

What Do the Numbers Mean?

An IP rating is always given as two digits (e.g., IP65 or IP67).

  • The first digit (0-6) indicates protection against solid particles (dust). A rating of 6 means the device is completely dust-tight.

  • The second digit (0-8) indicates protection against liquids (water). A rating of 5 means the scale can withstand water jets, and a rating of 7 means it can be submerged in water for a specific period.

Choosing the Right IP Rating
  • IP65: This is a common rating for many industrial scales. It offers complete protection against dust and can handle low-pressure water jets. This is perfect for general industrial environments or for scales that need occasional cleaning with a hose.

  • IP67: This rating signifies a higher level of protection. A scale with an IP67 rating is completely dust-tight and can be safely submerged in up to 1 meter of water. This is ideal for washdown applications in the food, beverage, or pharmaceutical industries where frequent, high-pressure cleaning is required.

At Changzhou Skyerscale Co., Limited, we provide a wide range of waterproof scales with robust IP ratings to ensure our products perform reliably in the most challenging conditions.
